Living With Psoriasis (And What to Do About It)

skin issues, psoriasis

Psoriasis is a fairly common condition characterized by itchy scales or irritating red patches that form when your skin cells grow rapidly and build up on the surface of your skin. Over 8 million Americans, and 125 million people worldwide, suffer from psoriasis.

Living with psoriasis

If you have psoriasis, you know just how much it can impact your daily life. Everything is just a little more difficult when you have to deal with outbreaks while at work or during social functions. Luckily, the team at Easton Dermatology Associates can help you manage the stress that both contributes to and results from psoriasis.

Psoriasis is incurable, but treatable

Psoriasis is cyclical, meaning the red patches come and go. Though it lives on your skin, it’s not simply a cosmetic issue, as it can impair your quality of life. While there is no cure, psoriasis is manageable, with treatment options aimed at slowing down the rapid cell growth and managing symptoms associated with outbreaks.

Treatment options to consider

Topical corticosteroids

The most common treatment for psoriasis flare-ups is topical corticosteroids, which work by reducing inflammation and relieving itching. But you should avoid using them long-term, as prolonged use can result in the thinning of your skin.

Vitamin D analogues

A synthetic form of vitamin D, these come in the form of creams or solutions that help to slow down skin cell growth.

Anthralin

This is a medication that slows skin cell growth, removes scales, and gives your skin a smoother appearance.

Topical retinoids

These vitamin A extracts can help decrease inflammation. It’s important to use sunscreen with these, though, as they can cause sensitivity to the sun.

Calcineurin inhibitors

These topical applications are helpful for reducing inflammation and plaque buildup in more sensitive areas, such as around the eyes. However, they’re only recommended for occasional use.

Salicylic acid

This is available in both prescription and non-prescription forms. It can help scrub off dead skin cells and reduce scaling.

Coal tar

As the name implies, this medication comes from coal and helps to reduce scaling, itching, and inflammation. It’s available over the counter in creams and shampoos, and also in higher doses, by prescription.

Moisturizers

While moisturizers alone won’t cure psoriasis, they do reduce the symptoms, like itching and scaling.

Options for managing stress

Stress can be a huge trigger for psoriasis outbreaks, and, in cyclical fashion, it can also result from having to live with the symptoms of psoriasis. Ask us about some helpful options for reducing and managing the stress in your life.
